Shoulder pain is a common ailment for many adults. Shoulder problems are very common and often happen before you know it. The frustration of inadequate treatment and lingering pain can be debilitating. B.K.S. Iyengar has worked out a wonderful series of poses to help people with shoulder injuries to carefully heal them. Every person is unique, so the sequence and the ways to work the poses are adjusted to be appropriate for the individual. However, there are some common principles that can be followed to help improve,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], recover, or prevent shoulder pain.
Iyengar yoga is very clear about how to proceed with arm and shoulder actions in the yoga postures. We start with how to hold the upper arm bone, or humerus, into the shoulder socket in the yoga posture, Tadasana,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Mountain Pose and the very first standing pose. The bone is inserted into the socket instead of distended, and the shoulder blade is in and moved down the back into the body to make a supportive wall on the back of the upper chest. The progress of the yoga posture depends on the individual’s alignment and the historical impacts to their fascial system in the arm or shoulder. For example, a strain or overuse in the biceps-side of the arm can change the balance in the shoulder in every movement the arm makes. So the work needs to be individually guided from that point by a qualified yoga instructor.
The shoulder is a shallow joint that provides 360 degrees of rotation, so the joint is vulnerable to being pushed too far. But in general, we are never warned of this fact, and many shoulder problems begin when people are in a competitive situation, trying to win instead of being cognizant of the ways to use their shoulders in a safe fashion.

Another basic movement to heal the shoulders is to grasp one’s hands behind the back, or to grasp a towel or belt to give more space for the front shoulder, chest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and arm if they need it. The same straightening of the arm along with the above movements is surprisingly effective in creating space and freedom in the arms,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], chest and breathing. Such a simple thing – yet so powerful! The collar bones are broadened and lifted, along with the sternum.
First,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], apply the above actions in Urdhva Hastasana, the Upward Hands Pose, a yoga posture one does all one’s life. To start, standing in the above basic standing yoga posture, Tadasana, the arms are straightened, then raised parallel to the floor. Then,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as Mr. Iyengar says, you re-pose. You check and re-set the insertion of the humerus into the shoulder joint. The bone has moved a bit, and those bits matter in the healing of a shoulder. The shoulder blade must be down and ‘glued’ into the back. Checking the arms for being parallel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one can proceed with awareness to bringing the arms overhead, or as far into that position as possible without strain. People are often surprised how a simple act of extending their arms up is no longer such an uncomplicated thing. By practicing this movement and yoga posture daily one can safely bring back much range of motion in the shoulder. Adding in action of the arms to the side and out parallel to the floor is another excellent builder of healthy shoulders. It is best to practice yoga postures with a certified teacher,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], since we all move from our imbalances and don’t really always understand how the actions need to be balanced.
The last yoga posture for basic shoulder health is Garudasana, the Eagle Pose. An adjusted form of the arms-only part of the pose stretches the tops of the shoulder blades in the most delicious way! Since all of these poses need a teacher starting you out right, an excellent idea is to check in your area for a certified Iyengar teacher. Practicing yoga postures correctly will help lead to healthy shoulders that feel and function beautifully!
Next is Gomukhasana arms. The whole yoga posture of Gomukhasana, the Cow Face Pose, is much more complicated, but to adjust the movements of the arm actions of that pose yield great effects for the shoulders. One arm goes up as in the Urdhva Hastasana above, then bends,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and you ‘pat yourself on the back.’ The action after setting up that position is to extend upward in the triceps while adding a wrapping of them inward towards the face,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and to make the biceps move downward to the shoulder joint. By using a strap or towel to catch the hand, one can gain more leverage to safely open the movement in the arm and shoulder. You can do that action by itself, or add the other arm’s action,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is placing the down-arm forearm behind the waist, lifting the biceps and rolling the shoulder back,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then raising the hand to eventually meet the other hand. Once that action is available, you can use the leverage of the hands working against each other to open the body.

Be cautious about recommending so-called Yoga to patients,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially the elderly. Patients with injuries from practicing Yoga are a common occurrence in our Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) clinic. Many teachers have made-up their own style ranging from almost no stretching, extreme contortions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not holding postures, practicing in a sauna-like room, using weights,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], etc.
Most people have erroneous ideas about classical Yoga. Yoga was a spiritual discipline. There were moral precepts and prohibitions that disciples had to follow. In addition, there could be dietary restrictions. Yoga had other paths to enlightenment besides asanas, breathing and meditation, such as,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], prayer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], faith and knowledge. The chosen path was determined by the Guru after analyzing the individual. In some instances any form or exercise was contraindicated. No connection to physical conditioning or health appears in the Vedic literature. You could not pay for Yoga lessons and only received new instructions when your Guru thought you had made sufficient progress. See-
Finally, to satisfy western doctors, the results should be explained in terms of western science.
Another reason why such clinical trials are difficult to evaluate is the subjects are not tracked daily. Anyone who has taught any subject that requires daily practice knows that some people do not practice at home while others are fanatical. Blueberries: (Vitamin E)
Broccoli is one of the more popular super-foods and is packed with healthy minerals and vitamins. It likes the sun, so if you are growing in pots they should be positioned on a sunny balcony or patio. Grow in deep well-drained containers and use a good potting compost. Broccoli won’t thrive if left to dry out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and containers tend to dry out quite quickly so water regularly, but don’t let the pots become water-logged. Plants shouldn’t be grown too close together as they will need space to develop. There are mini-versions of broccoli seed available. Always buy your seeds from a reputable supplier.

Most leafy green vegetables provide a healthy dose of folate and spinach can be grown in containers or large pots as well as in the veggie plot. Check on the seed packet whether there are any notes about growing in containers before you buy. Some varieties just simply do better out in the open. Spinach can be used as soon as the baby leaves are a couple of inches long, although never strip a plant completely. Grow a few plants and take a few leaves off of each one at a time.

Mushrooms are ideal container foods. Large garden centres and suppliers often have a choice of mushroom kits available, so if you like mushrooms try out different varieties. Always follow the manufacturer’s growing recommendations when you buy your kit to get the most from your mushrooms! Mushrooms contain a number of B vitamins and are a useful ingredient in a healthy diet.
Use decorative and imaginative containers for your plants. As long as they are well-drained and deep enough to accommodate the roots of your plants,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], almost anything goes!
Potatoes can be grown in purpose designed containers or old car tyres. A good harvest is possible without the trenching, earthing up and digging so often associated with growing potatoes. And of course, there is nothing as tasty as a home-grown potato. Forget the butter and grated cheese and enjoy spuds in all their natural glory. Purpose built potato barrels can be found at most good garden centres and are well worth a go if you have a little outside space.

Keep watered and weed-free and you will be able to grow vitamin A literally on your own doorstep!

The most important step to having a healthy body is to eat healthy food. What better way than to grow your own diet in a pot. Many fruits, vegetables, herbs and edible flowers can be grown in pots on a balcony or a patio and some can even be grown successfully on a windowsill.

I was always one of those people who could eat pizza without recrimination. Now those extra calories ceased to be benign. Multiple 10 minute workouts throughout the day
In fact, I've had many 3 mini workout session days. I'll start with a 10 minute stretching routine in the morning. Do an intense 10 minute weight lifting superset routine at lunch. I'll end the day with 10 minutes of HIIT outside my home or on my treadmill. Bang, that's 30 minutes of fitness covering all the bases. The best part is it hardly feels like I worked out in the time-sense. It also results in highly focused and intense sessions.
Many people don't bother stretching at all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I think that's a big mistake. I find being flexible improves my life as well as my workouts and athleticism.
The above is just an example. You can create many 10 minute yoga workout variations. As you can see, all the major movements are included (even standing with the lunges during the sun salutations).
Do them with 15 to 20 seconds rest between supersets.
For ten minute yoga routines, I may forego standing and balance postures or emphasize them. The key is to get in a great forward stretch, backward bend, inversion and a twist.

These are where you work out at maximum intensity for 10 to 90 seconds, followed by 10 to 60 seconds of low intensity. In 10 minutes you can get in a sweaty, intense cardio workout. The following is an example 10 minute HIIT workout on a treadmill:

More importantly, by getting in those 10 minute workouts when that's all the time I have (instead of skipping them), I maintain my momentum. Momentum is an extremely powerful and effective element to working out consistently in the long run.

We've been busy since then and sometimes all I have is a few 10 minute chunks of time for working out. More often than not, I dive into a super intense 10 minute workout ... but sometimes I fall for the "if I can't work out for 30 or 60 minutes, there's no point" mentality.
Are 10 minute workouts worth doing?
You can adjust the time intervals and intensity according to your ability. The sprint sessions should be high intensity. If that's walking at 4 mph on an incline, that's fine. It's the intensity that matters.
When I have momentum, I never skip a workout. When I skip a workout or 2 in the past, I've lost momentum and end up skipping more workouts until I dig in and get my momentum back.

Even if your life is insanely busy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], getting in 1, 2, or 3 ten minute workouts each day will result in a fitter you in the long run. Don't fall for the trap in thinking that you must have 30, 60 or 90 minutes for a workout deter you from getting and remaining fit. It's like working - working harder/longer isn't necessarily better than working smarter. The same applies to fitness.
If you have a 20 minute session only in a given day, you can consider supersetting your yoga workouts with weight lifting sessions.

On the flip side, you don't have to stretch for 30 or 60 minutes every day to benefit. I often restrict my stretching/yoga routines to 10 minutes.

Bench press / Seated rows

You may be too busy to fit in a 30 or 60 minute workout,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but anyone on any day can scrape together 3 ten minute chunks of time to get in a full regimen throughout the day. Splitting up workouts is great because you can do super intense sessions.

One must consider the media frenzy that surrounded the Octuplet case as the previous day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there was tragedy at Kaiser Permanente,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the medical system that provided the care for the Octuplets. A working family was fired under circumstances that led to a murder/suicide of this entire family with kids in Los Angeles. There was some significant negative media coverage regarding Kaiser Permanente. The following day, the Octuplets were born which most likely prompted Kaiser’s Public Relation’s Department to blitz the media with the successful birth and great care of these Octuplets, effectively drowning out the murder/suicide. We currently do not know who the RE for this case was,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the subsequent media coverage of Ms. Suleman has raised several issues.

Ms. Suleman claims that for each IVF attempt, she had about 6 embryos transferred, which may represent a deviation of the standard of care whether this occurred in the first attempt or last. This case is currently being evaluated by the California Medical Board. Please note that nothing Illegal was done here.
It is unfortunate that in some cases and not this one in particular,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], REs can be motivated to transfer more embryos than normal to state that they have “the highest pregnancy rates in town”, using this as a tool to recruit patients. Epidemiological studies have been performed to prove/disprove this theory and we hope that these are a minority of REs and that if anything, this case makes REs think twice about being aggressive with embryo transfers when not indicated to “make themselves look good”.
We now know that Ms. Suleman underwent IVF not only for this pregnancy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but also for her previous ones. We also know that she is not currently in a relationship per her history. We thus don’t know if she even has any fertility issues or trouble conceiving since per what I understand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she used a directed sperm donor. These cases are usually solved with IUIs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but she had IVF and there’s speculation that her tubes are non-functioning. One must then realize that this would give Ms. Suleman the best prognosis for conceiving with treatments which should prompt a conservative approach,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], following guidelines from our governing body ASRM.
Thus in Ms. Suleman’s case, psychological along with home & social evaluation by professionals needed to be considered prior to performing such an aggressive transfer. This type of evaluation is not routinely done, but Ms. Suleman’s case is also far from routine. The RE would have then had more of a case to not respect the patient’s autonomy and be conservative with the transfer of embryos. But what if the patient was “Angelina Jolie” who may pass these tests? Should the RE then respect the patient’s wishes knowing that the likelihood of octuplets is extremely low? And if then, should the RE be liable for any risks/damages the babies and pregnancy may have after this type of evaluation respecting the patient’s decision? These are questions that our field is currently trying to tackle and we can only hope that only good arises from this case.
It is not unsual for REs to transfer 6 or even more embryos to a select group of patients, in particular those who are older, have diminished ovarian reserve,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and/or have multiple IVF failures. These patients MUST also be willing to have selective reduction performed in the event of the low likelihood of high-order multiples. Each case warrants its own evaluation and we hope that REs will continue to have the freedom to make this decision with their patients for their best interest. Regulating the quantity of embryos transferred would decrease the amount of high-order multiple births, but would also cheat many patients of the opportunity of being parents until a better proven technology is developed.

This places the RE in a very difficult situation since we operate under the notion of Patient Autonomy; a patient gets to decide her course of treatment when fully understanding the risks and benefits.
